“I see you, I feel you, I am you” (Unknown).
Let me tell you a story about a mom who folded all her babies’ clothes and had them neatly put away. She then went into the closet to hang the rest of the clothes up while her youngest was asleep in the crib and the other one was playing with some blocks quietly. Whenever there is quiet your alert signals should be going off because I guarantee, those kids aren’t just playing quietly with their toys. They are destroying everything you just did. All those clothes that you spent a half hour organizing and putting away are now lying all over the floor that is covered in dog hair because you didn’t vacuum for a week and the dog who is shedding decided to play a visit in the baby room earlier. Now, you don’t just have baby clothes to put away for the second time, but you also have baby clothes with dog hair on them and a screaming child who just got yelled at. Don’t forget the sleeping baby! He is not sleeping anymore because the other child just screamed. Now you are in full-blown survival mode. Get the babies to stop crying then focus on your laundry. Oh, and remember the shedding dog, well that dog just ran into your deaf dog who is now freaking out and barking nonstop because she thinks there is an intruder. At this point in the day, the mom gives up on putting the laundry away. She puts both babies down for a nap, puts the dogs outside, and sits on the couch to watch re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy and all was well in the world.
If you can relate to this mom, give yourself a break. Not every day is going to feel magical. You will have days that may be quite entertaining. It is okay to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Sit on the couch and veg out. Nobody is grading you so do what you need to do to get back into that tranquil state of mind.
