It amazes me how postal workers are not sent home in the worst weather conditions while everyone else is. Sure, we have plows that are out working and people working on power lines. But that is all necessary work for others’ survival. Plows have to be out so emergency crews can get through. People who work on powerlines are trying to help restore power, so others don’t freeze to death. But what are mail carriers doing to save lives? Here is that Christmas present you ordered too late that you are dying to get. Is everyone seriously that concerned about getting mail today when your postal carrier can get frostbite in 5 to 10 minutes? Some postal workers have only walking routes and must be out in this weather for hours at a time.

I am very passionate about this because my mother is a postal worker. She is one of the hardest workers I know. She would never call in sick to get out of work. She will get into four ditches along the way to work and still go in. I remember one year, she got stuck in the snow and had a friend from work pick her up and take her in. She was going to worry about getting her vehicle later, so she was on time for work. I understand that they can’t always close when there are a few inches of snow. But when their life is at risk from the bitter cold windchill and counties send plows home, why does my mother have to be out risking her life to deliver mail? USPS could care less about their workers because it is a “government” job. So? Other government jobs are closed when there is a blizzard warning and a -30 windchill. I have been on my Life360 app watching my mom work, and at one point, it didn’t show her moving for 10 minutes. I called her up to make sure she was okay! She told me she is doing fine but is at some apartments that take her an hour to get to, so the app might not show she is moving. Sadly, I have to watch my mom on this app to ensure she is alive and okay when her job doesn’t want to send her home. Tornado warning, you can work. Blizzard warning, you can work. Hurricane, you can work. The news should report how postal workers must be out in this weather, no matter how life-threatening it can be. Please share this so we can make a change. Nobody’s mail is worth another’s life.
