Have you ever heard the saying babies are like sponges? It’s because you will say something to your children, not realizing that they are picking up on every word and understanding the context in which it needs to be used.

I go to pick up my daughter from daycare and find out she took a book and hit a boy in the head, unprovoked because my daughter can turn on her mean streak out of nowhere. Anywho, then she is told to be nice, Avery, and you know how my daughter responds? “No, naughty Avery.” Well, when my daughter does something bad we say she is being “naughty.” So, she decided she was not going to be nice Avery, she was going to be naughty Avery. Why? I don’t know; as I said, she can have a mean streak. So yes, babies are sponges, if we think so or not.

There was another time that my daughter was a little over a year old. She started to fall down the steps, and my husband and I caught her. She then whispers, “shit.” Of course, she had heard this word before and knew what context to use it in.

I bring this up because talking to children builds their communication and language skills. These skills include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is important to talk to children, even when they can’t respond. If you look at the research, they always say to read to your child every night. Do you know why this is important? It’s because of the language skills it builds upon. Many words we do not use in our daily language are embedded in books. If we read different books to our children, they pick up on these words.

The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology (2019) studied the relationship between reading and the number of words learned, by the age of five. The results below show how many words children knew by the age of 5 from the number of books read to them.

    • Never read to= 4,662 words
    • 1-2 times per week= 63,570 words
    • 3-5 times per week= 169,520 words
    • Daily= 296,660 words
    • 5 books a day= 1,483,300 words

A ONE MILLION WORD GAP!

How to Foster a Love for Reading

Turn off the tv. Yes, I said turn off the tv. How is a child supposed to build a love for reading if they are just watching the tv? Some may say they are still learning, but they are missing the key piece which is someone responding to them. When we respond to our toddlers, and they respond back, then we again respond this is building conversation. They are building listening and speaking skills, and comprehension strategies. Engaging with toddlers enhances their literacy development.

Even background TV significantly reduces parents’ interaction with their children. A recent study found parents say about 200 words or less in an hour if the TV is on compared to the 1000 words an hour if the TV is off.

Mind Foundation

Research also shows that when children are sat in front of a screen they are losing the ability to learn social skills. They lack the ability to understand nonverbal cues from reading faces. They are also at an increased risk of having attention problems later on.

Some people may say that they like the background noise. Well instead of having the tv on try listening to classical music. The graphic below is a great image that shows the 10 benefits of listening to classical music.

I have been reading to my babies since they were in the womb. Probably before they could actually hear me, but I was excited to start. Every night my husband and I read a book to our babies and discuss the different parts. This is how we begin our book readings:

      1. This is the front cover
      2. This is the back cover
      3. This is the spine
      4. These are the pages
      5. This is the title (read the title)
      6. This is the author (name the author), who writes the story
      7. This is the illustrator (name the illustrator) who draws the pictures.

Once our children are older we will prompt them to point to different letters. We may say, “Can you find the letter b? Point to letter b.” Then we can build upon this during the day by tracing the letter b or trying to find it in a cooking book.

My daughter is almost 2, and my son is almost 1 year old. So I have a variety of book types. We have board books, textured books, rhyming books, books that sing, pop-up books, lift-the-flap books, find-an-image books, etc. We keep books in almost all parts of our house. We have a basket in the living room that has 5 to 8 books in it. Of course, the kids’ bedroom has books, and ours does. The kitchen has some kids’ cookbooks for them to read. Then we even have some bath time books that can get wet. Just having the opportunity for them to read is huge. If we didn’t have the bath books in the bathroom, they would not get the option to grab them and practice reading.

Now that my daughter is older, we let her choose the books she wants us to read before bedtime. Often she will get more than one book to read, which is great since these statistics show we should be reading 5 books before bedtime, not just one like I thought! Finding out we need to read 5 books a night made my anxiety amp up. My husband says I already read books with the kids throughout the day, so I am meeting that quota, but I thought maybe I don’t need to focus on the number of books and should focus on the amount of time we are reading. With that said, most of the books I read to my littles are between 4 to 5 minutes long. By Kindergarten, research says that kids should be read for 30 minutes a day and before that 20 minutes a day.

I decided to research what happens if my daughter continuously chooses the same books to read. Is she still going to reach that 1 million words milestone? If you look at the Kids Health website it looks at each reading milestone per age. So, even though you may be reading the same books to your child, they pick up on different language skills each time. Mind Champs found that reading the same book over and over again helps with word recognition, builds phonics skills, and improves comprehension. I can attest to this because my almost-two-year-old will pick up books with repetitive sayings and when it gets to that part, she will say it before me. Studies also show that children need to hear a word 4 to 12 times before they build that word into their vocabulary.

Where Do I Get Books for Free or Cheap?

So you may be thinking to yourself that you want to read more to your child, but you don’t have many books or access to many books. These are the steps that we take to get more books.

        1. Sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library- you will receive monthly free books for your child that are designed for their age. My children love receiving these books!
        2. Head to the library! Find the local library that you can visit and check out books. If you don’t like your library, find another one close by with a cheap yearly charge.
        3. Garage Sales! I have found many books at garage sales where people sell them for a quarter. They mainly just want to get rid of them.
        4. Facebook Market Place- You never know what mom is trying to get rid of books their kids outgrew.
        5. Mom to Mom Sales-I’ll often find books for a quarter or fifty cents.
        6. Dollar Tree-They have books for only a buck
        7. Walmart

@authornicolegreen Decided to start teaching my daughter some skills she needs for Kindergarten. She has been really interested in books for awhile now so we are diving into letters, sounds, and rhyming. We sing the days of the week and months of the year song as part of our bedtime routine and we go over the weather outside in the mornings. I'm certified in early childhood and have a masters in special education but always open to more ideas to help my kiddos grow! Planning on working on these for a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the evening. Going to work on one letter a week and then have small activities that go along with the letter of the week. I'm so excited and can't wait to track her progress 😊 #preschool #education #momlife #school #toddlersoftiktok #parents ♬ Live Your Beautiful Life - Gray Griggs

This iconic story has inspired a movie, an opera, and the imagination of generations. When Max dresses in his wolf suit and causes havoc in the house, his mother sends him to bed. From there, Max sets sail to an island inhabited by the Wild Things, who name him king and share a wild rumpus with him. But then from far away across the world, Max smells good things to eat…

      A told B,
      and B told C,
      “I’ll meet you at the

Ricky, the Rock That Couldn’t Roll

The original, best-selling “Rock” book keeps on rolling, now celebrating its 5th anniversary!

This modern-day classic follows 14 lovable rocks (and one wise little ladybug) on a heartwarming and hilarious journey, universally loved by children, parents and teachers alike.

From zippy little pebbles to big strong boulders, the rock friends get together to play and roll around their favorite hill, only to find that one of their friends, Ricky, can’t roll with them. Unlike all of the other rocks, who are all round, Ricky can’t roll because he’s flat on one side.

Determined not to leave their friend behind, the rocks set out to help Ricky roll – one way or another.

When the last knot was tied, and the work was all done,
the only step left was for Rick to have fun.
They stood back and watched, feeling nervous and tense,
as Rick breathed in deep, with increasing suspense.

He moved slowly at first, testing out his new mold,
and then, for the first time…Ricky the rock rolled!

This sweet, imaginative picture book, written in verse, brings a fresh set of characters to life in a story that highlights perseverance and triumph in the face of adversity, and the power of true friendship, combining the spirit of The Giving Tree with the rhyme and rhythm of Dr. Seuss.

Targeted for children ages 3-11, this is the first of a series of books featuring the “You Rock Group” that kids are sure to cherish as they grow, and learn from through empowering, motivating and fun-to-read stories.

      Kids ages: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9
