Fire Cider

Fire cider is a popular herbal tonic made from a combination of spicy and powerful ingredients, such as garlic, onions, ginger, horseradish, hot peppers, and herbs, steeped in apple cider vinegar. It is used for various health and wellness purposes, such as cold and flu prevention. There are many different ways to make fire cider, which makes finding a recipe challenging. The recipe I used is below. It is important to note that due to its strong and sometimes spicy flavors, Fire Cider is only recommended for ages 12 and up.

Ingredients:

– 1 medium-sized onion, chopped

– 1/2 cup fresh ginger, grated or finely chopped or 1/2 tsp for powder

– 1/2 cup fresh horseradish root, grated or finely chopped or 1/2 tsp for powder

– 10 cloves of garlic, crushed or minced

– 2-4 hot peppers (such as jalapeños or habaneros), chopped (adjust to your spice tolerance)

– 1 lemon, zest, and juice

– 1 orange, zest, and juice

– 2-4 tablespoons of dried herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme, or oregano)

– 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder (or 2 inches fresh turmeric root, chopped)

– 1 tsp of peppercorn

– 1/4 cup of raw honey (optional, for sweetness)

– 2 to 3 cinnamon sticks

– Apple cider vinegar (enough to cover all ingredients)

Instructions:

1. Start by preparing all your ingredients. Chop or grate the ginger, horseradish, garlic, onions, hot peppers, lemon, and orange zest. Squeeze the lemon and orange to extract their juice.

2. Place all the prepared ingredients in a clean glass jar or airtight container. Make sure the jar has a tight-fitting lid.

3. Add the dried herbs, turmeric powder (or fresh turmeric root), and honey (if using) to the jar with the other ingredients.

4. Pour enough apple cider vinegar over the ingredients to cover them completely. Use a non-metallic lid or place a piece of parchment paper between the lid and the jar to prevent corrosion.

5. Seal the jar tightly and shake it well to mix all ingredients.

6. Store the jar in a cool, dark place for about 2-4 weeks, shaking it daily to ensure the ingredients are well combined.

7. After the steeping period, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean glass bottle or jar. Be sure to squeeze as much liquid as possible from the ingredients.

8. Your fire cider is now ready to use! Store it in the refrigerator, and it can last for several months. You can take 1-2 tablespoons daily as a tonic or use it in recipes like salad dressings, marinades or diluted with water as a wellness shot.
